Background

The Four Nations NRM Governance group consists of elected people from Kaurna, Ngadjuri, Ngarrindjeri and the Peramangk Nations. The vision of the Four Nations NRM Governance Group is to work together to promote and preserve Aboriginal cultural heritage, native title and spirituality in relation to soils, water resources, geological features and land and sea scapes, native vegetation and animals and other native organisms and ecosystems. Through this vision the Four Nations Governance group will P1010015be up holding customary obligation and in doing so fulfl their cultural inheritance to country. It is the desire of this group to be the mechanism for the integration of indigenous issues into NRM programs in the region.

Our Role

Rural Solutions SA has been engaged by the ALMR NRM Board to project manage the regions’ Aboriginal engagement process. To achieve this Rural Solutions SA has facilitated the development of the Four Nations Group and now seeks direction from that group, as group ownership is a priority. Rural Solutions SA continues to act in an executive support role at the request of the Four Nations Group, providing facilitation support, organisational skills, understanding of the NRM processes and a commitment to maintaining relationships.

Outcomes

As with all communication and engagement initiatives, work is ongoing but signifcant progress has been made over the last 5 years. The Four Nations Governance Group has developed its own Terms of Reference, FNGG_Book_Coverproduced a Protocol Document and a Strategic Plan 2007 – 2010. Initial emphasis has been on the development of a logo to represent the Four Nations and this has been a catalyst for generating ideas and group aspirations so that all members feel comfortable working together. The logo also represents identity and reinforces ownership of the whole engagement process. Importantly it has been developed by Aboriginal people; they have been actively engaged in making it happen and the resulting documents and products, written in their words.
