Background

Wauraltee Island (also known as Wardang Island) is located on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The island is a signifcant cultural icon to the Narrunga people. In the past there have been many reports written and environmental and economic projects begun with varying degrees of success and long term benefit. The catalyst for developing this feasibility study has been a desire for sustainable long term and strategic growth by the community.

Our Role

Rural Solutions SA were contracted by the community to develop a 100_1418feasibility study in partnership with MLCS Corporate which:

  • Identified the four phases of development for a viable economic business on the island, including sustainable land  management practices; community aspirations and realistic market entry and development.
  • Determined that stakeholder involvement was critical for success
  • Researched the tourism side of the proposed business including analysing tourism demand and the types of tourism experiences to offer e.g. guided, self funded etc.

The final concept plan was launched at a major event organised by Rural Solutions SA and MLCS Corporate in conjunction with the community.

Outcomes

The community has a plan that can be picked up at any time and implemented. Rural Solutions SA has worked with the community to investigate Indigenous Protected Area status for the island. The community is still keen to pursue this avenue and to seek long term funding to continue to protect and manage the natural resources of the island.

Feedback has been extremely positive and all relationships have been maintained.
