Innovative landscaping - retaining stormwater for use

Project >  Design, planning and landscaping at Oaklands Railway Station

Council representatives and Design Engineers are increasingly acknowledging the need to incorporate ways to reduce stormwater runoff impacts to the catchment.  This can be achieved by designing innovative landscapes that use stormwater rather than providing it an express exit out to sea.

What we did
We worked with design engineers to present an innovative solution Landscaping at Oaklands Railway Stationinvolving  complete assessment, design, restoration and implementation of the redevelopment of the  Oaklands Railway Station.  We presented our proposal to the Council and Trans Adelaide for approval and then continued on with the on-ground works of the project providing a swift movement from planning into production.

We worked with the construction team to install eco-sumps and eco-swails to capture stormwater and place it in the landscape watering existing 100 year old trees and complimentary landscape.  The landscaping was complete using a select range of adaptable indigenous species and included installation of bird boxes to complement habitat availability.

What we achieved
Desired outcomes from Trans Adelaide, the council and the design engineers were all achieved while ensuring maximum environmental benefits.  The incorporation of stormwater capture and reuse within the landscape presents a new opportunity in landscape design for South Australia planning ahead for the predicted lower rainfalls due to climate change.
