Developing a land management and revegetation plan for a sand quarry

Project > Kalbeeba Sand Quarry Rehabilitation Plan

This project presented a landscape management and revegetation plan that enables Boral Resources (SA) Limited to undertake a high standard of restoration work for the former extractive industry site near Gawler.

What we did

The revegetation assessment included an appraisal of the condition of remnant native vegetation on the site, the nature and distribution of proclaimed and environmental weeds, the status of pest kalbeeba1animals (in particular, rabbits) and other potential environmental risks to the land including on-site rubbish.

The effective control of both weeds and vermin (pest animals) will be critical to the success of the revegetation of the property. A comprehensive program of weed and pest animal management was presented in the report.

The entire area will be replanted to local species.  Planting designs, step-by-step guidelines and indicative costs for the project were presented in the report.

Depending on seasonal conditions, it is projected that the restoration process will take approximately 24-36 months to complete.

What we achieved

The Rural Solutions SA report provides a blue print that will ensure:

  • site stabilisation
  • reduced soil erosion by water and wind
  • livestock grazing on suitable parts of the property
  • increased amenity value
  • appropriate long-term natural resource management.
