Guide to Climate Change and Adaptation in Agriculture in SA

Farmer access to incisive climate resources has been boosted with the release of  a new guide on ways to deal with climate change

The guides was unched at the Grains Research and Development Corporation and South Australian Farmers Federation Grains Research Update at Eudunda on Tuesday, August 7.
Reviewers praised book authors for their efforts to alleviate `information anxiety’ in the climate change arena .
Appila farmer and South Australian Grains Industry Trust representative Jim Heaslip said the value of the Guide to Climate Change and Adaptation in Agriculture is the perceptive use of key information, helpful charts and pictures.
Lead authors SARDI’s Melissa Rebbeck and PIRSA’s Elliot Dwyer, designed the book to provide primary producers and natural resource managers with climate trends and projections relevant to their region.
A major section deals with future management approaches to prepare and adapt to climate change covering aspects of managing land use, crops and animal species.
“There’s plenty of information the climate change arena, but it’s either in the form of sensationalist headlines, without many facts, or documents that are so complex, they are difficult to understand,” Jim said.
“Until now most information on climate change has provided little information on how farmers can adapt.
“The authors have done the hard work of sifting and sorting to focus on the key climate trends so this guide will serve as a practical intermediate step for many wanting to focus on ways to adapt agriculture.
“The production of the book is an excellent example of collaboration between SAGIT and PIRSA’s units including SARDI and Rural Solutions SA and those involved with natural resource management.”
