Transcript of interview with Dr Ben Baghurst and Terry Price

Ben
Landfill is an increasingly difficult issue for local government because there’s a requirement to reduce the amount of material going into landfill currently, so many landfills are being closed and the EPA has a strict list of requirements when closing landfills and we’re able to come through for an operation and actually generate a plan to close a land fill in an environmentally effective manner, to mitigate all the risks of  the owners and operators would otherwise be facing.  When it comes to mining there is an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and also changing community expectations when it comes to miners and their operations, we’re again able come through and produce a mining operations plan and the type of rehabilitation plans that are required to keep PIRSA minerals happy with the operation and meet that community expectation of minimal harm to the environment.

Terry
How important are government regulations in what you actually do?

Ben
They’re absolutely crucial, they set the goal posts by which operators need to work within, and we are able to then come along know what the requirements are, understand what the community expects and then help the operator to meet all of those objectives.

Terry
How aware do you believe the community is in general today as against past years, should they be more knowledgeable about what kind of things you’re doing ?

Ben
I think the community is becoming increasingly knowledgeable generally because they have a greater understanding now of the types of pressures on our environment. Landfills and mining are both examples of pressures on the environment. The community knows that we don’t have an unlimited resource there and they’re all taking a role in safe guarding its future.
