Welcome to Agritalk.
This week we’ll be talking about a new book put out by the Beef Co-operative Research Centre. Otherwise known as the Beef CRC
The 52 page publication is called ‘Science for Beef’.
It follows on from another publication you may remember called ‘Producing Quality Beef’ which was published in 2003 & 2004.
Science for Beef features research highlights mainly from the second beef crc, which ran from 1999 – 2006.
It’s split into 3 main sections Messages for Producers, Advances in Meat Quality, Work in Progress
Messages for Producers starts with an excellent summary article ‘Key Messages for Southern Commercial Breeders’ by Bob Gaden. The section includes stories that reflect on what has been learned and how producers can take advantage of this research on farm.
Advances in meat quality - explains some recent discoveries about the factors affecting carcase and meat quality along with their commercial implications. Techniques such as tender stretching and the effect of hormonal growth promotants (hgps) are looked at in detail.’
Work in progress -has brief information about current research. It discusses Projects such as developing a vaccine for ticks, and Developing a genetic test for polled, horned or scur characteristics in cattle
The Beef CRC’s CEO, Dr Heather Burrow says ‘The Science in Beef Booklet looks at practical ways to improve the quality of meat’
This booklet is available online for free download on the Beef CRC website. Just go to the beef crc website.
