Livestock Library

Radio Transcript

Welcome to Agritalk Radio

This week we are going to be talking about the Livestock Library

Australia’s unique ‘Livestock Library’ is going from strength to strength.

Practically all Australian beef and sheep industry research and advisory publications are now available on line.

The Livestock Library has quickly built-up to contain more than 70,000 full text publications, which can be accessed in a single ‘click’, with no charge.

Livestock Library Manager, Ruth McIntyre, said it is the only site that provides easy access to content to all key livestock industry information.

“By doing a single search on the Livestock Library it is possible to simultaneously interrogate the websites of all the state departments of agriculture and primary industries, as well as AWI, MLA, Kondinin Group, Beef CRC and the Sheep CRC. Other sites will be added in future.

“Its becoming a daily resource for many people in the livestock industries – from producers and their advisors, through researchers and extension officers to students and educators.”

I did some brief searches on topics like OJD, drought feeding, and worms and it came back with a whole variety of websites, journal articles and other publications.

The site is attracting well-over 2,000 visitors a month and ninety per cent of the visitors are from within Australian, and ten per cent are from overseas.

The Livestock Library can be accessed from wherever there is an internet connection which is handy for people who need to travel for work

The purpose in setting up the on-line Library was to ensure that valuable research findings that go right back to the 1950s could be easily stored, accessed and used by producers, researchers and students.  Also, to ensure that valuable industry resources do not duplicate prior research.

The Livestock Library has been developed and funded by the CRC for Beef Genetic Technologies and the Australian Sheep Industry CRC, and Australian Wool Innovation.
